International Style Institute Recap
The first ever International Style Institute in partnership with Allure Magazine took place Friday, February 27 thru Sunday, March 1 at The Grove in the heart of Los Angeles. Host and partner, revered Celebrity Stylist Anita Patrickson, took students through a 3-day bootcamp style course, teaching them the ins and outs of the business of becoming a stylist. Attendees enjoyed guest speakers from all over fashion and beauty, who further explained all the different avenues of the industry as they relate to working as a stylist. Students walked away with knowledge, connections and hands-on experience that will be invaluable to their careers as they break into the world of styling.
The weekend kicked off in the movie theater at The Grove. 60+ page syllabus in hand, attendees settled in for a seated get-to-know-you session with Anita, where she introduced everyone to herself and to the world of styling. The first wave of guest speakers included Johnathan Crocker, Director of Global Sales for AG Jeans and Juliana Pires, VP of VIPServices for SHO+CO, who each gave attendees advice about breaking into the fashion world and building relationships as a stylist. Dana Gardner from The Wall Group and Celebrity Publicist Erica Gray also stopped in to share with students about gaining representation, as well as working with publicists to style celebrity clients. Before the day concluded, listeners also heard from photographer Mike Rosenthal and men's styling consultant, Andrew Weitz. The following day was an exciting one for our students, as they got the chance to put the knowledge gained during the morning session and on day 1 to use with a mock editorial shoot. Stages, props provided by Crate & Barrel and professional lighting and photo equipment were employed to achieve our very own professional studio setting. Students were each challenged to create a look, inspired by romantic, bold color and denim themes, choosing from clothing and jewelry items pre-screened by Anita. On-demand beauty app PRIV was on site, consulting with our budding stylists to help them create cohesive beauty looks on their models using their hair, makeup and nail services. Renowned photographers Jana Williams, Corina Maria Howell and Amy Graves snapped away and captured what was, for many of our students, their first taste of a professional styling experience.
Day 3 was the last, but certainly not least exciting day for our stylists-in-training. Aside from an early morning video chat with Julianne Hough, one of Anita's clients, students also got to hear from famed hairstylist Riawna Capri of Nine Zero One Salon and Makeup Artist Spencer Barnes, who, along with Anita, gave our students some insight into what it's like working with other artists as a "Glam Squad" unit. Attendees got one last challenge, where they were partnered with a classmate, consulted with them about an occasion they'd like to be dressed for and then allotted $100 in gift cards to Forever 21 and The Grove to create the look. After presenting their "clients" to the class, one last round of guest speakers including Celebrity Makeup Artist Jamie Greenberg and Style Expert and TV personality Louise Roe stopped in to share more about making it in the industry. To close out this fabulous, jam packed 3-day experience the attendees were given their very own "styling kit" gift bags, a diploma and a glass of champagne to cheers one another on their accomplishment!
