Ashley Tisdale On The Best Skincare Tips For Millennials
A version of this story first appeared on Forbes.com
As the star of the High School Musical film series, Ashley Tisdale is a bonafide icon for the millennial set. A lot of time has passed since the first film dropped, though, and in that time the millennial generation has grown up. Tisdale has grown with her millennial audience too, graduating from High School to new projects like Netflix’s Merry Happy Whatever, CBS’s Carol’s Second Act, and even her own makeup line, Illuminate.
In that time, the skincare concerns of millennials have also matured. Finally over the acne phase but not yet to the point of wrinkle worries, Tisdale struggled to find a skincare line that catered to the relevant skincare concerns of her generation. Enter: Neutrogena’s Bright Boost™ Collection, a new line developed by and for millennials, with ingredients that specifically target dull and dehydrated skin.
We spoke with Tisdale about her plans for 2020, current projects, and her top skincare tips.
SIMPLY: You just had a Netflix show premiere. Congrats! What’s on the docket for 2020?
ASHLEY TISDALE: Yes! Merry Happy Whatever just came out on Netflix, and I’m still doing my CBS series Carol’s Second Act, which just got picked up for a full season. After the New Year we’ll still be shooting that series and hopefully a season two of Merry Happy Whatever as well, so I’m pretty busy!
I don’t like to do any type of resolution because I like to manifest. I’ll usually do intentions in the new year, but I’m just excited to continue doing what I’m doing.
SIMPLY: Do you have any intentions that you’ve set so far?
AT: Not yet. I wait until we get into the New Year to redo the vision board.
There is a project that I don’t want to talk too much about, but something that I am inspired to do—I don’t know what it is exactly yet—but I would love to share my journey with skincare and hair care and nutrition that I’ve learned over the years.
SIMPLY: Any tips on how to stay organized and keep it all together when life gets busy?
AT: I wish I knew! I think it’s important to take time to yourself, especially when you’re busy. I’m a big fan on meditation in the morning. Stressing out can mess up your skin in ways, especially around the holidays, so meditating in the morning and taking care of yourself is important.
On Sundays I like to do a facial and use a nice exfoliator and have some me time. With work and with the holidays, we’re always giving, so it’s important to give some time for ourselves as well.
SIMPLY: Tell us about your skincare routine and some winter weather tips.
AT: My skin tone can go dry or oily, so especially in the winter months, I like to use a serum, like the illuminating one [from Neutrogena’s Bright Boost™ Collection]. I love it. It takes your dull skin and makes brighter. Especially with dull skin, it’s so nice to have a serum soak it all up.
I drink a lot of water. I’m a real big believer in nutrition and how that helps your skin.
I also love to exfoliate, but you have to keep up with it; I do it every couple of days. I try to use an exfoliator like the Neutrogena Bright Boost™ Resurfacing Micro Face Polish, it is so gentle. I also use the Bright Boost™ Gel Cream. If you pair that with the illuminating serum, it brings you three times brighter skin.
Sometimes your skin just needs to be rejuvenated, you know? And what I love about this line is that it was created by millennials, for millennials.
SIMPLY: What do you consider your holy grail skincare product?
AT: For me, it’s a face wash. That’s one of the biggest things to fight dullness in skin. Not washing your face is one of the “skin sins” that us millennials are known to do. You have to take off your makeup at night, even if it’s super late. A good face wash is just the best. It also helps with dehydration and dryness.
SIMPLY: Any other skincare tips for busy, on-the-go women?
AT: I can’t even explain how important water is for me. I remember doing a YouTube video on skincare a couple years ago and I talked about the liter of water I drink a day. Especially when you’re busy and traveling, it is so important. It changes my skin. If I don’t drink enough water, it’s just not the same.
The whole thing of being in our thirties is all about wanting your skin to stay bright, and it starts to go dull. I think that [using] the right products and drinking tons of water brightens and rejuvenates your skin, so water is a big thing that it’s easy to just forget sometimes. That’s something that I’ve always sworn by.
SB: Of these 4 products, do you have a favorite?
AT: I love the gel cream, but I am also a real big believer in the illuminating serum. If you put them together, within one week you can start to see results. It’s pretty amazing.
